The Top 5 Reasons We Love Newquay
We are extremely proud but entirely unsurprised that Newquay has recently been voted the Number 1 holiday destination in Cornwall. It was even Number 2 in the whole of the UK in a poll by a TripAdvisor company, beating the likes of Padstow and St Ives!
We may be biased, but our gorgeous home town is completely unrivalled when it comes to family friendly fun and beautiful scenery. Newquay really does have it all; from bodyboarding and sunset picnics to go karting and aquariums, you’ll be absolutely spoilt for choice when you visit.
Whether you’re looking for entertainment, adventure or simply relaxing with a cold beer whilst the kids play football and collect shells, here are our top five favourite things about Newquay.
Extensive Family-Friendly Activities
Kids (and adults for that matter) of all ages will find plenty of interactive and exciting activities in and around Newquay for sunny and rainy days alike. No trip to Cornwall is complete without hanging ten like the pros and there are plenty of surf schools nestled along the coastline offering paddle boarding, surf lessons and body boarding to get your ocean experience started. With qualified instructors and a range of different ability beaches, there’s a surf school that will suit every family down to the ground.
For those days when it’s wet, windy and wild (Cornwall is known for its changeable weather…) there are lots of indoor activities to keep you entertained. The Blue Reef aquarium, Water World swimming pool and Newquay Zoo all offer good value, family fun, and are all within walking distance of Newquay town centre. The zoo is even opposite the swimming pool, so you can hear the monkeys screeching as you’re putting on your cossie!
Our Second-To-None Beaches
We’re blushing and really bragging now, but not only has Newquay been named the top holiday destination in Cornwall, it is also home to Britain’s Best Beach! Lusty Glaze Beach, a private cove tucked away just on the outskirts of the town, has golden sands, blue seas and stunning sunsets. Adrenaline junkies can try their hand at abseiling, tightrope walking, surf lessons or jet ski rides, but if chilling out with a hot chocolate or a glass of wine is more your thing, its gorgeous beach restaurant and bar is completely child and dog friendly.
At low tide, you can walk along the sand from Newquay Harbour beach to Tolcarne. These beaches are all sheltered by headlands so the surf conditions are always smaller, safer and calmer, plus all three are lifeguarded by the RNLI from Easter to September. Sometimes you can even see seals popping their heads up in and around the bays!
Food for Thought
As well as Cornish locals, fisherman and surfers, you will also find nationalities from all over the world that have made Newquay their home as once they arrived they never wanted to leave! This has resulted in an extensively varied array of eateries from Japanese sushi to classic fish and chips. With so many choices, you’ll struggle to decide which one to try first!
There are cute cafés brimming with local coffee and delicacies and plenty of pubs with sunny beer gardens and monster portions. In no particular order, our favourites are; The Stable, which over-looks Fistral Beach with gorgeous views, delicious pizzas, and sprawling tables that are perfect for big families and wet dogs; WAX at Watergate Bay (FYI, there’s one in Newquay town too) with heaps of deals, a massive children’s menu and super friendly staff; and The Mermaid Inn at Porth, a classic Cornish pub that spills onto the sand with great pub food and reasonable prices.
(Probably) The Best Sunsets Anywhere
Our sunsets are completely unrivalled. The colours literally sprawl across the horizon, meeting the clouds and throwing golden light over the end of a great day. Legend has it, if you look hard enough, you can see a green flash when the sun creeps below the ocean. After all, you can never post too many sunset photos on Facebook, right?
The Way of Life
Has our crazy and fast-paced world that we live in got the better of you? Do you spend too much time checking your phone, waiting for the tube, running around after your kids, parents or mother-in-law? Sometimes we let life get ahead of us and it’s easy to forget that beauty can be found in life’s simpler pleasures.
Newquay offers you everything you could ever need from a big city, just with (a lot) less of the stressful stuff! Leave your iPad at home, let the kids run around on the miles of golden beaches, suncream up and fall asleep in your bathers. Let your day be dictated by the rising and setting of the sun, eat when you’re hungry and relax in the knowledge that everyone is having quality family fun. Again we may be biased, but we honestly believe life is just better by the beach!
